How We Started
Sanctuary Palm Springs was born from the vision and compassion of LD Thompson and David Rothmiller—acclaimed writers, filmmakers, and long-time advocates for LGBTQ+ rights. Their journey into the foster care system began in 1994 in Washington State, where they were trained and licensed to work with boys in the SAY (Sexually Aggressive Youth) program. After opening their home to five youth through that program, they later became foster parents to a newborn family member recovering from prenatal drug exposure—an experience that deepened their commitment to vulnerable children in care.
In 2010, LD and David relocated to California’s Coachella Valley and continued their fostering journey. They were not only licensed in California but also made history as the first gay couple licensed by the state of Mississippi. This groundbreaking step enabled them to foster a transgender teen from Mississippi, giving them personal insight into the unique challenges faced by LGBTQ+ youth in foster care.
Their passion and firsthand experience culminated in the founding of Sanctuary Palm Springs in 2017—an affirming transitional housing program specifically designed for LGBTQ+ foster youth aging out of the system.
In 2021, a transformative merger with Oak Grove Center led to the formation of Oak Grove Sanctuary Palm Springs, strengthening their capacity to serve and support even more youth.
Today, Oak Grove Sanctuary Palm Springs remains deeply committed to providing LGBTQ+ foster youth with safe, stable housing, personalized support, and the tools they need to thrive. More than just a place to live, it is a springboard to independence—a community where young people can heal, grow, and embrace their futures with confidence.
